Explore Italy Tours offers a guaranteed elite experience for both wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts new to the art of wine. Our Brunello Tuscan Wine Tour will introduce you to the fine wines that earned Italy’s first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation. Led by a dedicated guide you will travel to the cellars to learn about the production and meet the locals while enjoying delicious wines and foods.
With roots dating back to the 14th century, Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine grown from the vineyards around the Tuscan town of Montalcino. Since then, Brunello wines have developed to achieve an international reputation. Brunello di Montalcino was the first wine to receive the DOCG designation, a guarantee of quality and local production. By law, Brunello di Montalcino wines must be produced using only the Sangiovese grapes grown around Montalcino. If you have a taste for elegant wines that are bold in flavour and rich in aroma you will definitely fall in love with Brunello di Montalcino wines.
Located 70 miles south of Florence, Montalcino is an idyllic Tuscan village situated atop a high hill. The town’s location offers a premiere vantage point for multiple valleys and orchards in the surrounding area. Today, visitors of Montalcino can see buildings dating back to the 1300s. Interesting architectural structures include the Cathedral, built in the 14th century but extensively renovated by the 19th century architect Agostino Fantastici. Even older is the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, a Benedictine monastery that dates back to the time of Charlemagne. The Abbey first appears in historical documents in 1051.
Like Montalcino, Montepulciano is situated on a hilltop providing glorious Tuscan vistas. You will immediately fall in love with the rolling sunny hills dotted with purple and red flowers and the charming country roads. Like its twin village, Montepulciano produces its own high-quality wine: Vino Nobile. The history of this wine is as old as the town itself, as its vineyards are mentioned in documents from the 700s. A bottle of Vino Nobile is prized for its age and flavour; the wine must be aged for at least 2 years before bottling. Montepulciano is renowned for fine food in addition to fine wine, and no visit to the town is complete without sampling some of the local honey and cheeses.
